At Risk for Chronic Student Absence

The fundamental purpose of collecting data on students at risk for chronic absence is to empower both LEAs and MSDE to identify attendance challenges at the earliest possible stage in the academic year. Through systematic monthly data collection, MSDE can monitor attendance patterns statewide, identify emerging trends, and partner with LEAs to design and implement evidence-based interventions for students experiencing obstacles to consistent school attendance.

MSDE is dedicated to closely monitoring the attendance data of students who are at risk of chronic absence. This focus is on students who missed 10% or more of school days during the current school year. By identifying these at-risk students early, MSDE can strategically assist LEAs in developing and implementing targeted support initiatives aimed at improving attendance rates, enhancing academic engagement, and promoting better overall educational outcomes.

This report is a ZIP file of two reports:

  • The At Risk for Chronic Student Absence report: Copy and paste Column B data into the data collection tool provided by MSDE.

  • The Student Audit CSV file for the purpose of verifying the At Risk for Chronic Student Absence aggregate numbers.

Attendance data can be verified with the System Reports ADA/ADM by Student and/or ADA/ADM by Date.

All attendance codes with a Presence Status of Absent are used in the calculations.

The Refresh Premier Attendance Views Data function should be run prior to running this report to ensure the most accurate data calculations. The Refresh Premier Attendance Views Data function can be found at the school level: Start Page > Attendance > Refresh Premier Attendance Views Data.

Student Selection

  • The Student cannot be set to be excluded from State Reporting.

  • Only Students in grades K-12 are reported.

  • The student was enrolled during the selected Report Start Date and Report End Date.

  • The Report Start Date is the first day of the current school year.

  • The End Date is the last calendar day of the reporting month.

Select School to Export

If run at the district level, choose one of the following:

  • Select One or Multiple Schools – Select schools to include in the report. To select a single school, click that school. To select multiple schools, use Ctrl+Click and select each school to be included. Select schools to include in the report

  • Select All Schools – To select all the schools: select the first school, scroll to the bottom of the school list and use Ctrl+Click on the last school. All schools will be selected.

If run at the school level, the report includes all records associated with the current school that meet the selection criteria. To change the current school, click School at the top of the page and choose the appropriate school from the list.

Select Students

Indicate which students to include in the report by selecting one of the following options:

  • The Selected [number] Students Only

  • All Students

Note: If running the report for a single student, or group of students, select the students prior to running report

Use Alternate School Numbers

Select Yes if you would like to use Alternate School Numbers when processing the report.

School Year - User Selected at Run Time

Select the school year for this report.

School Month - User Selected at Run Time

Select the school month for this report.

Report Start Date

Enter the start date for this report. This should always be the first day of the school year.

End Date

Enter the end date for this report. This will be the last calendar day of the reporting month

At Risk for Chronic Student Absence Report Output

The cumulative 'as of' date refers to the last calendar day of each reporting month. All attendance data should be calculated from the first day of school through this date.

School Year

The four-digit school year for at-risk chronic absence being reported.
• 2026 (SY 2025-2026)

School Month

Reporting School Month in two-digit format MM - Month Name (example: 09 - September).

LEA Number

The two-digit state designation of the local school system.

All Student Enrollment

Total student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

≥10% Absent Count

The school year-to-date count of students absent 10% or more days enrolled (Total days absent ÷ Total days enrolled × 100. Students reaching or exceeding 10% should be included in this count).

Female Student Enrollment

Total female student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

Female ≥10% Absent Count

The school year-to-date count of female students absent 10% or more days enrolled.

Male Student Enrollment

Total male student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

Male ≥10% Absent Count

The school year-to-date count of male students absent 10% or more days enrolled.

Non-Binary Student Enrollment

Total non-binary student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

Non-Binary ≥10% Absent Count

The school year-to-date count of non-binary students absent 10% or more days enrolled.

Hispanic/Latino Student Enrollment

Total Hispanic/Latino student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

Hispanic/Latino ≥10% Absent Count

The school year-to-date count of Hispanic/Latino students absent 10% or more days enrolled.

American Indian/Alaskan Native Student Enrollment

Total American Indian/Alaskan Native student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

Total Asian student count with the cumulative “as of” date.

Total White student count with the cumulative “as of” date.
