MDE Home Language Survey

To track the Home Language Survey (HLS) the following updates are made to the student Title III English Learner (EL) and Immigrant page:

• MSDS Reported tab:

  • Primary Language: Text added: (HLS: What language is used most by the student?)

  • Home Language: Text added: (HLS: What language is used most at home?)

• Non-Reported tab:

  • Text changed on “First Date Entered in USA Schools:“ to “First Date Entered in USA or Puerto Rico Schools:” and added: (HLS: if yes, when did the student enter the US Schools?)

  • Text changed on “Country of Birth:“ to “Country of Birth if outside the USA or Puerto Rico:” and added: (HLS: Was the student born outside of the US or Puerto Rico)

• A third tab named Home Language Survey (HLS) is added with the following text:

  • What language is used most at home? MSDS Reported tab: Home Language (First, Second, and Third Home Language fields)

  • What language is used most by the student? MSDS Reported tab: Primary Language

  • Was the student born outside of the US or Puerto Rico? Non-Reported tab: Country of Birth if outside the USA or Puerto Rico

  • If yes, when did the student enter the US Schools? Non-Reported tab: First Date Entered in USA or Puerto Rico Schools
