Student Programs Role-Based Security Setup
Student Programs use role-based security to control access to individual programs, including Homeless and Section 504. Security User Roles determine which programs appear in the Student Programs Dashboard and which program records the dashboard returns.
Configure Student Program access for the appropriate Security User Roles. Programs remain unavailable to users whose assigned roles do not include access to those programs.
Step 1: Open Security User Roles
-
Sign in to PowerSchool SIS with district-level administrative access.
-
Navigate to Security User Roles.
-
Select the security role that requires Connecticut Student Program access.
PowerSchool SIS applies Student Program permissions through Security User Roles, allowing common permissions across users assigned to the same role.
Step 2: Locate Student Program Access
-
Locate the Student Program Access section for the selected role.
-
Review the available Connecticut Student Programs.
The available program security settings include programs such as Homeless and Section 504.
Step 3: Configure Program Access
-
Enable access for each Student Program appropriate for the selected role.
-
Leave programs disabled when the role should not have access.
Program access operates independently. For example, a role can provide access to Homeless, Section 504, both programs, or neither program.

Step 4: Save the Security Role
-
Click Submit to save the configuration.
-
Repeat the configuration for each Security User Role that requires Student Program access.
Step 5: Assign the Security Role
Assign the configured Security User Role to the applicable user accounts and schools.
Security roles can apply within a school-specific context, allowing different access based on responsibilities at individual schools.
Step 6: Verify Dashboard Access
-
Navigate to Data and Reporting > Student Programs Dashboard.
-
Review the available programs in the Student Program selection.
-
Confirm that only programs permitted by the assigned Security User Role appear.
-
Select an authorized program and run the dashboard.
-
Confirm that the dashboard returns only authorized Student Program records.
Expected Security Behavior
Role-based security controls both program visibility and dashboard results:
-
Authorized programs appear in the Student Program selection.
-
Records for authorized programs appear in dashboard results.
-
Unauthorized programs do not appear in the program selection.
-
Dashboard results exclude records for unauthorized programs.
-
School-level access limits dashboard data to the applicable school, while district-level access supports multiple schools within the permitted program access.
Access to the Student Programs Dashboard does not automatically provide access to every Connecticut Student Program. The assigned Security User Role controls which program information becomes available.
Recommended Validation
After configuration, validate access with representative Security User Roles:
|
Role |
Expected |
|---|---|
|
Homeless-only role: |
Homeless appears; Section 504 does not appear. |
|
Section 504-only role: |
Section 504 appears; Homeless does not appear. |
|
Combined-access role: |
Both Homeless and Section 504 appear. |
|
No-access role: |
Neither program appears. |
