Ed-Fi Categories and Resources
- Category – Ed-Fi consists of a series of standard category schemas, which define the structure of the XML that transports the data between systems. The Ed-Fi categories are transparent to the user and serve as "wrappers" for publishing resources to the state Ed-Fi ODS. As each state's Ed-Fi implementation is unique, only the categories currently used by Tennessee are listed below.
- Resource – Ed-Fi resources are persons, places, events, objects, or concepts about which data can be collected. A resource provides context for a data element (for example, K12 Student, K12 Staff, School, Program, etc.). To supplement the standard Ed-Fi resources, the Tennessee Department of Education has defined custom extensions to capture additional state-specific data. Only the resources used by Tennessee are listed below.

The Descriptor category is used to describe metadata about the descriptors and their structure. It is used to define enumeration vocabularies that are not "fixed" within the XML schema, but are loaded in XML files and linked to their source. | ||
The Education Organization category describes education organizations, their structure, and their education offerings. It is used to exchange education organization information about a state's schools, Local Education Agencies (LEAs), Education Service Centers (ESCs), and others. | ||
Education Organization Calendar | The Education Organization Calendar category carries school calendar information. It can be used to exchange school calendar data, including instructional days, sessions, and grading periods. | |
The District Bus category carries bus and bus staff information for a given district. | ||
The Master Schedule category carries education course offerings and the times and days offered. | ||
The Student category carries the Student resource, which defines students and contains all their identifying information. | ||
The Parent category defines parents and captures the familial relationship between the student and the parent as well as indicators for the parent for residence, primary parental contact, and emergency contact. | ||
The Staff Association category carries staff and teacher information. | ||
The Student Enrollment category carries student enrollments in schools and in sections. | ||
The Student Program category describes students' participation in programs. | ||
The Student Cohort category carries student cohort information. | ||
The Student Discipline category carries discipline incidents and discipline actions. | ||
The Student Attendance category carries student attendance events. | ||
The Student Grade category carries grades for a grading period or group of grading periods. | ||
The Student Transcript category carries transcript information for courses and student academic records for a given session. | ||
