OnSIS Verification Summary - Section F

Section F - French as a Second Language

The Section F (French as a Second Language) report collects aggregate data of all students who have an active status as of the last day of the submission period of the current year and for only students who are enrolled in French as a second language (FSL) programs. This report can be run for either elementary or secondary schools also for the three submission periods (October, March, and June).

Elementary Report

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria determine which database records are used in the report. Refer to selection criteria for analysis when the report does not return the correct records.

School Selection

  • Schools that have Exclude From State Reporting ([Schools]State_ExcludeFromReporting) selected are not included.

Student Selection

  • For the selected academic year, School BSID, Submission type, select all students from the school enrolment permanent table where:

  • Students where S_ON_STU_XML_SCHOOL_ENROL_C.Stu_Brd_Res_Stat_Type = '01' ( Pupil of the Board)

  • The report includes Active Students only: Student does not have an Enrolment End Date before or on the Count Date for the submission period. Student is active when:

    1. Enrolment End Date = null

    2. For June submission, Enrolment End Date = July 1st. To add flexibility, a student is considered active if the Enrolment End Date is greater than the count date.

  • And students who have records in S_ON_STU_XML_SECOND_LANG_C table where the [S_ON_STU_XML_SECOND_LANG_C]type is one of ('001','002','003','006', 030).

In the previous version of the report intensive Core French was counted under Core. Report is to include/count Intensive Core French program students in either Extended Program or Immersion Program depending on the number of minutes.

  • If the number of minutes is from 60 to 149, include/count in Extended.

  • If the number of minutes is from 150 to 300, include/count in Immersion.

Board Number and Name

The name and Board School identification (BSID) number of the school board.

The academic year for which the report is run; the report is associated with the OnSIS Reporting Dates entered in District Setup. Format 'YYYY-YYYY'. For example, 2012-2013.

Core Program

Total number of Students

Count number of students in Core program for the grade, where

SECOND_LANGUAGE_PROGRAM.MINUTES_PER_DAY_OF_INSTRUCTION is greater than or equal to 20 and less than or equal to 59 minutes

Prints a count of students enrolled in a "Core" program.


Counts the total number of students enrolled in Core French as a Second Language program.

Core Program

Number of Minutes of French Instruction per Day

Calculate the average number of minutes of French instruction per day

Print (Total Number of Minutes / Total Number of Students enrolled in Core French).

Where (SECOND_LANGUAGE_PROGRAM. MINUTES_PER_DAY_OF_INSTRUCTION) is greater than or equal to 20 and less than or equal to 59

Extended Program

Total number of Students

Count the number of students in Extended program for the grade, where

Prints a count of students enrolled in an "Extended" program.

Counts the total number of students enrolled in Extended French as a Second Language program.

Count the number of students in Immersion program for the grade, where

Prints a count of students enrolled in an "Immersion" program.

Counts the total number of students enrolled in Immersion French as a Second Language program

Secondary Report

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria determine which database records are used in the report. Refer to selection criteria for analysis when the report does not return the correct records.

School Selection

  • Schools with the "Exclude From State Reporting" ([Schools]State_ExcludeFromReporting) checkbox selected will not be included.

Student Selection

Report all active students enrolled in second language program

  • For the selected academic year, School BSID, Submission type, select all students from the school enrolment permanent table

  • Students where S_ON_STU_XML_SCHOOL_ENROL_C.Stu_Brd_Res_Stat_Type = '01' ( Pupil of the Board) or 06 (Independent Studies)

  • The report must include Active Students only: Student does not have an Enrolment End Date prior to or on the Count Date for the submission period. Student is active when:

    1. Enrolment End Date = null

    2. For June submission, Enrolment End Date = July 1st. To add flexibility, a student is considered active if the Enrolment End Date is greater than the count date.

  • and who have records in S_ON_STU_XML_SECOND_LANG_C table where the S_ON_STU_XML_SECOND_LANG_C.type is one of ('001','002','003','006').

  • Fully High Credit students are excluded:

    • Students where (S_ON_STU_XML_SCHOOL_ENROL_C.HIGH_CREDIT_FTE > 0 AND S_ON_STU_XML_SCHOOL_ENROL_C.FTE = 0) OR

    • Students where (S_ON_STU_XML_SCHOOL_ENROL_C.HIGH_CREDIT_ADE > 0 AND S_ON_STU_XML_SCHOOL_ENROL_C.ADE = 0)

Course Selection

Include:

  • ministry defined courses (MDC) (i.e., MINISTRY_DFND_CRS field) and

  • locally developed courses (MDC) (i.e., LOCALLY_DEV_CRE field).

  • Include only courses where S_ON_STU_XML_CLASS_ENROL.Credit_value is greater than zero.

Exclude:

  • Dual Credit Courses (DCC) . Dual credit course are courses with i.e. INSTITUTION_TYPE is Not NULL

  • If a student was enrolled in a course in the previous submission period, the report should not include this student's course in the total credits.

Include courses

  • Where the Course Start Date (STUDENT_CLASS_ENROLMENT.COURSE_START_DATE) is within the submission period Cycle Start Date and Count Date

  • The course has not been Withdrawn or Dropped (STUDENT_CLASS_ENROLMENT.WITHDRAWAL_TYPE_ID is null) OR It was withdrawn/dropped on the count date (STUDENT_CLASS_ENROLMENT.WITHDRAWAL_DATE/STUDENT_CLASS_ENROLMENT.COURSE_END_DATE = SUBMISSION COUNT DATE

The report searches the Student Class Enrolment table and Segment table to find the course, which begins with one of the following course codes. If one of the course codes is found, it indicates that the student is taking a French As A Second Language course.

    • Core Program courses will begin with FSF

    • Extended Program courses will begin with FEF

    • Immersion Program courses will begin with FIF

    • All other courses with a Language of Instruction which equals French.

Based on the students age: IF the student's age as of Dec 31st of the academic year 21 or over then count the student on the 'Student 21 or over' row

Else count the student based on the student grade, total number of students where

S_ON_STU_XML_SECOND_LANG_C.Type = 001 (FSL Core) or 006 (ICFP)


Prints a Total number count of students enrolled in a "Core French" as a Second Language program.

Intermediate: This is the aggregate sum of the credits in a Core FSL Program for all students and place the value in the appropriate row based on the student grade

  • Loop through the student class enrolment, and get the total credit. if the Ministry course code/ Local developed course code begins with FSF" then

    • if 4th character is 1 or 2 count credit value under Intermediate

    • If 4th character is 3 or 4 count credit value under Senior

IF the student's age as of Dec 31st of the academic year 21 or over then count credit on the 'Student 21 or over' row under the appropriate column

Intermediate: This is the aggregate sum of the credits in FSL Programs of Extended and/or Immersion, in all other subjects taught in French, for all students and place the value in the appropriate row based on the student's grade.

Senior : This is the aggregate sum of the credits in FSL Programs of Extended and/or Immersion, in all other subjects taught in French, for all students and place the value in the appropriate row based on the student's grade.

"Other Subjects Intermediate Credits" and "Other Subjects Senior Credits" is based on the following:

Rule 1: Language_type = French

Rule 2:

Case A - For Classical Languages (course code begins with "LV")

If the 4th character of the course code is "B" or "C" (Level 2 or 3), it would be counted as an Other Senior Course otherwise it would be counted as an Other Intermediate Course.

Case B - For Native Languages (course code begins with "LN")

If the 4th character of the course code is "D" or "E" (Level 4 or 5), it would be counted as an Other Senior Course otherwise it would be counted as an Other Intermediate Course.

Case C - For International Language courses (course code begins with "L" but not "LV" or "LN")

If the 4th character of the course code is "C" or "D" (Level 3 or 4), it would be counted as an Other Senior Course otherwise it would be counted as an Other Intermediate Course.

Case D (else) - For all other courses (course code does not begin with an "L" or "FSF", "FEF" or "FIF")

If the 4th character of the course code is "3" or "4" (Grade 11 or 12), it would be counted as an Other Senior Course otherwise it would be counted as an Other Intermediate Course.
