Student Special Education Programs

This view captures student Special Education Program participation as published in the StudentSpecialEducationProgram Association resource within the Student Program category. The layout includes the School Name, PS Student Number, Student Name, Grade Level, Program Name, Begin Date, End Date, State Student Number, Last Publish Date, and Publishing ID.

studentSpecialEducationProgramAssociations

This association represents the Special Education program(s) that a student participates in or receives services from. The association is an extension of the StudentProgramAssociation particularly for Special Education programs.

StudentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation (student special ed program) records will report for the school enrollment record(s) where a student’s Special Education Start Date (IEP Start Date) falls within the reporting year. Additionally, if the student switches schools before the Special Education End Date (IEP End Date), or if the student does not have a Special Education End Date value, a studentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation record will report for each school enrollment. This means that students with high mobility could (and will) have multiple studentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation records; One for each school they have been enrolled in while they are in special education.

  • The BeginDate for the studentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation will be the School Entry Date for that particular school enrollment.

  • The EndDate for the studentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation is not required and will not be published.

Important - Students that are currently in Special Education and students that have exited Special Education this year:

In order for these students to publish correctly to PED, please follow these guidelines:

  • Students currently in Special Education:

    • The student Special Education Start Date must be the earliest date the student received services. This date can be in a previous year or the earliest date they received services in the current year. Once this date is entered, it should not be changed during the reporting/school year.

    • The Special Education Indicator must be set to Y.

    • The Date exited special education program after End of Year last year must be blank or a future date.

  • Students that have exit Special Education (this year):

    • The student Special Education Start Date must be the earliest date the student received services. This date can be in a previous year or the earliest date they received services in the current year. Once this date is entered, it should not be changed during the reporting/school year.

    • The Special Education Indicator must be set to N.

    • The Date exited special education program after End of Year last year must have a value that is in the current year and is less than the current date.

      • Note: If the Special Education Indicator is set to N and the Date exited special education program after End of Year last year value is blanked out, a delete will be sent for any previously published Special Education program records. For these records to persist (and reflect the student exited Special Education), the Special Education Indicator (N) and the Date exited special education program after End of Year last year values must remain for the reporting year.

Selection Criteria

Records are published if the following criteria are met:

  • StudentUniqueId must be populated in PowerSchool.

  • The student must not be excluded from state reporting.

  • The school must not be excluded from state reporting.

  • The student’s school exit date must be greater than the student’s entry date.

  • The student must be identified as a Special Education student.

    • [S_NM_STU_X]SpEd38_YN = Y (for a current special education student) or N (for a student that has exited special education).

    • The date range between the following fields must span some part of the reporting year.

      • [S_NM_STU_X]SpedEntryDate

      • [S_NM_STU_X]SpEdExitDate

  • Special Education Start Date field values that fall in a previous school year. If the Special Education Start Date value is in a previous school year, the logic will publish the student’s school entry date as the record beginDate.

Resource Output

  • A separate record is published for each enrollment period the student was in Special Education.

  • The StudentSpecialEducationProgramAssociation resource is dependent on the prior publishing of the following resources: Student and StudentSchoolAssocation.

  • LEAs and Schools may upload (publish) data to the Ed-Fi ODS in real-time or on-demand ("Run Now" button).
