Graduation Requirements

Introduction

In order to graduate, a student must pass a minimum of 30 credits of course work, comprising compulsory credits, technology education credits, and optional credits. The credit breakdown, both by diploma category and compulsory/technology/optional, varies depending on the student's program, one of:

  • English
  • French Immersion
  • English Technology
  • French Immersion Technology

The secondary report card report currently does not support Program Français.

Note: Printing Report Cards

To ensure the correct printing and calculating of Graduation Requirements page of the Report Cards, when defining subject groups the Optional Credits must be the last group of the graduation set.

The following tables summarize the ministry minimum credit requirements for each program.

Implementation

English Versus French Immersion
A student is deemed to be a French Immersion student if any of the [Students]MB_Program1-4 fields has a value of '110' (French Immersion - Early Entry), '111 (French Immersion - Middle Entry), or '112' (French Immersion - Late Entry); otherwise the student deemed to be an English student.
Classes Taught In French
A class is deemed to be taught in French if either of [Courses/Sections]MB_LanguageOfInst has the value '02' (French).
Technology Education Program
A student is deemed to be in a technology education program (either English or French Immersion) if the graduation contract associated with the student (see next section) contains the subject group name 'Technology Education'; otherwise the student is deemed to be in the non-technology English or French Immersion program.
Credit Requirements
Credit requirements will be implemented using Graduation Planner. At minimum each division will define a standard graduation contract for each program that applies to the division to reflect the ministry minimum requirements in the tables above for the program. Any name may be used for the graduation plans, however in order for the secondary report card to recognize which credits apply to which diploma requirement the subject group names for each requirement within a plan must match exactly that shown in column 1. The secondary report card identifies the subject group associated with each diploma requirement based on the first word of the subject group name. Users may use whatever names they wish for the selectors (sub-groups) within each subject group, but the total number of credits associated with each subject group must match exactly the value in column 2 (for subject groups with a range, the number of credits must not exceed the maximum in column 2).
The selectors for each requirement must be defined using credit types, not course numbers. Users may create whatever credit types are appropriate for local use provided they are assigned to the appropriate subject groups.
If a division has additional requirements a student must meet, a separate, additional graduation contract must be created if the division wishes to track progress against that set of requirements.
To handle cases where a student has more than one graduation contract (e.g. a standard ministry contract and a division specific contract) a custom field will be added to the Students table. The State/Province-MB data entry page will contain a drop down containing all of the graduation plan versions defined in the GPVersion table. The [GPVersion]Id value for the selected entry will be stored in [Students]MB_Ministry_Grad_Plan. If the value for a student is undefined, the report card will use the graduation plan with the lowest sort order (i.e. [GPStudentPlan]SortOrder).
Excess Credit
Credit in excess of the 30 minimum required credits is reported on the appropriate columns of the Optional Credits line in the Diploma Requirement section on the secondary report card. Therefore, the value of Optional Credits/Total Earned To Date may exceed Optional Credits/Credits Required For Graduation, and the value of Totals/Total Earned To Date may exceed 30.
